Endgame confirms it: Captain America will always be my favorite Avenger – CNET

Last fall, when Chris Evans tweeted that he'd had an "emotional day" wrapping filming on the fourth Avengers film and that playing Captain America "over the past eight years has been an honor," fans of the Marvel superhero flipped out. Many feared Cap — aka Steve Rogers — would be killed off in Avengers: Endgame, which opened in theaters worldwide this week. Well — MAJOR SPOILER HERE — fear no more. Captain America doesn't die. But he does end his run as an Avenger in an exit that's emotional, bittersweet — and well, just perfect. And I say that as a huge Captain America fan. He's my favorite Avenger — and the fact that we're both from Brooklyn is only part of the reason. It's because he embodies the ideals — bravery, honesty, loyalty, nobility — that get overlooked when we talk about what makes someone a superhero in movies these days. So I braced myself for a future in which the very prolific and successful Marvel Cinematic Universe would plod on wi..

Avengers: Endgame spoiler-packed review — so close to being perfect – CNET

Avengers: Endgame begins and ends with quiet, intimate moments. And it's that sense of intimacy that makes this galaxy-spanning MCU blockbuster such a triumph. Marvel's chapter-closing Endgame is in theaters now and already breaking box office records and mobilizing emotional fans. If you haven't seen it, stick with our spoiler-free review. If you have, read on for my spoiler-packed assessment (and check out our CNET crowdsourced review)… We open in a rural field as a hero loses everything, his family, his whole life, the same devastating loss felt by half the galaxy. It ends in another tranquil countryside as another hero regains the life he lost long before. And he also passes a baton to the future, pointing the way to a new era for the Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In between, Endgame tells an epic story. It spans the galaxy, across space and time, and climaxes with a time-realigning battle involving vast armies of superstar superheroes. Yet somehow i..

Teacher’s viral Avengers: Endgame plea to students — Don’t spoil it for me – CNET

One teacher might go Incredible Hulk on his students if they spoil the movie for him. Marvel Studios Kids around the world seeing Avengers: Endgame this weekend will no doubt be talking about the movie at school come Monday — and one teacher doesn't want to hear a word. Twitter user @kamiilious tweeted a photo Friday of what she says is a note her teacher affixed to her classroom door begging students to stay spoiler-free when anywhere near him. "My little brother is on Tampa on a business trip. I am waiting until he gets back to see Avengers: Endgame. That will be Wednesday at the SOONEST," the tweet reads. "DO NOT discuss ANYTHING about it anywhere near my classroom UNTIL THIS SIGN COMES DOWN. You know how much I love Marvel comics." The much-anticipated MCU clincher, which opened worldwide Wednesday, has pulled off the biggest global opening in movie history, hauling down an estimated $644 million so far, according to Disney. Given the fan fervor around the film tha..

How we reported a controversial story about the day the dinosaurs died

This is part of the Transparency Project. Learn more about the project here. This article refers to a story originally published in April 2019, “New fossils may capture the minutes after the dinosaur-killing asteroid impact.” How did you find this story? This was an unusual story for us because it was based not only on a research paper published in a scientific journal, which is the type of study we usually cover, but also touched on a profile in the New Yorker that described tantalizing findings not mentioned in the research study, particularly suggestions of dinosaur fossils found at Tanis. Paleontologists reactions to the profile tended to range from skeptical to outraged: Finding dinosaur fossils right at the KPg boundary is a big deal, and big claims require big proof; they need to be verifiable by other scientists. Many of the early news stories that emerged were about the controversy and the profile, and the actual research paper got buried in the brouhaha. But I wondered whet..

How we reported on the challenges of using ancestry tests to solve crimes

This is part of the Transparency Project. Learn more about the project here. This article refers to a story originally published in April 2018, “New genetic sleuthing tools helped track down the Golden State Killer suspect.” I was in the midst of writing a series on consumer DNA testing when news broke that police had arrested a suspect in the Golden State Killer case. Investigators had reportedly used an ancestry database to track the man down, and speculation was that either AncestryDNA or 23andMe, two popular direct-to-consumer testing companies, had turned over customer data to the police. Both companies denied involvement. Because I was deep into do-it-yourself DNA analysis at that point, I knew about a genealogy site called GEDMatch. There, people can upload raw DNA data from one company to find relatives that tested with different companies. Police confirmed to the Sacramento Bee that they had used the site in the investigation. But I also knew that the type of DNA police usu..

Introducing the Transparency Project

Here at Science News we work hard to make sure that our coverage of the latest advances in science, medicine and technology is clear, accurate and comprehensive. But we realize that whats clear to us about how we do science journalism may not be clear to our readers. And we want to be open and accountable about that process. So were launching the Transparency Project. In the coming months, well be experimenting with ways to show who we are and how we do what we do, revealing decisions we make to ensure our coverage is accurate and fair. To figure out which methods are most helpful for increasing transparency, were partnering with News Co/Lab, a collaborative lab at Arizona State Universitys Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, which is aimed at helping the public find new ways of engaging with news and information. News Co/Lab has partnered with other journalism organizations, including The Kansas City Star, The Fresno Bee and other papers in the McClatchy medi..
