Four Brits from English language school detained on drug charges in China

Chinese authorities have arrested four Brits for suspected drug-related offences.

The UK nationals were part of a group of 19 people who were detained, which included seven teachers and nine students from English-language training provider Education First (EF).

Police made the arrests in Xuzhou, in the eastern Jiangsu province, north of Shanghai.

No details about the type of drugs involved, or the ages and identities of those involved, have been disclosed.

EF said it was cooperating with officials following the arrests and said it regretted the matter.

A Foreign Office statement said: We are in contact with the Chinese authorities following the arrest of four British people in Jiangsu province, and are providing consular assistance.

China has some of the harshest punishments for drugs offences in the world.
