A two-year-old girl has been rushed to hospital after she was sexually assaulted in Australia, a local health department said.

The toddler was flown to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide on Saturday, according to the Northern Territory Health Department.

Police have arrested and subsequently charged a 24-year-old man with sexually assaulting a child, the ABC reported.

He will appear at the Alice Springs Local Court via video link from prison on April 19.

The alleged incident happened in the town of Tennant Creek in Australia’s Northern Territory.

Police said that they are not looking for any more suspects, and have given no more information.

Steve Edgington, the mayor of Tennant Creek, told the ABC the incident is ‘abhorrent’ and said it prompted a meeting of local leaders.

He added: ‘The Aboriginal elders have banded together, they want to find solutions to preventing this from ever happening again.’
