A father has been arrested after he allegedly punched his four-month-old daughter dead.
Joseph George Gazzam, of Pennsylvania, told officers he repeatedly beat Victoria because she would not stop crying.
The 30-year-old initially told Allegheny County Police the baby had fallen out of bed at their Mt. Lebanon home on Sunday, reports the Post Gazette.
However, they say Gazzam changed his story on Monday after an autopsy showed Victoria had multiple bruises and fractured bones.
A criminal complaint quoted Gazzam as saying: ‘She stopped breathing and her eyes rolled back in her head.’
He called 911 when he realized she wasn’t responsive.
Emergency services arrived on the scene at around 12.30pm before Victoria was taken to St. Clair Hospital. She was pronounced dead shortly after.
The death was ruled as homicide after an autopsy revealed trauma to her head and body.
she also suffered bleeding of the brain, a lacerated heart vessel, a lacerated left kidney, a liver contusion, three fractured ribs and a hemorrhage behind the eyes.
Homicide Detective Anthony Perry said: ‘Dr. James stated that the above injuries could not occur to an infant by falling from the surface of a mattress that was two feet, two inches above a carpeted floor.’
The child’s mother was working at the time.
Gazzam is being held in the county jail, charged with homicide and child endangerment.
