A British woman being held in an Egyptian jail accused of smuggling tramadol tablets will appear in court today.

Laura Plummer, 33, was detained last month after authorities found 300 tramadol capsules and Naproxen in her suitcase when she was entering the country.

The shop assistant, who was apparently bringing the painkillers to her husband Omar Caboo, 34, said she didn’t know the pills were illegal in Egypt.

Plummer, from Hull, has been held in a 15ft by 15ft cell with 25 other women since her arrest but hopes to be freed on bail at today’s hearing in Hurghadah.

Her husband Mr Caboo has apparently shown the Sun newspaper evidence the pills were for his bad back but the authorities have already said Plummer’s ignorance was not an excuse.

Mr Caboo apparently produced X-rays, medical records and a marriage certificate as proof.

Her brother, James Plummer, 31, backed up the story and said the incident had been ‘blown out of proportion’.

He added his sister had thought she was doing a ‘good deed’ and she was currently ‘completely out of her comfort zone’ in jail.

Mr Plummer said he was told his sister could be jailed for up to 25 years or even face the death penalty if convicted of drug smuggling.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said its officials were ‘supporting a British woman and her family following her detention in Egypt’.
