‘Ruben Loftus-Cheek can be as good as Dele Alli’, claims former England captain Ray Wilkins

Ray Wilkins believes Loftus-Cheek can, with time, be on a par with Spurs star Dele Alli

Ray Wilkins believes Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek can be as good as Tottenham star Dele Alli, if given time to prove his talents at the top level.

Loftus-Cheek is preparing to make his full England debut on Friday night as the Three Lions take on world champions Germany at Wembley, although many are questioning his call-up to the senior team.

At 21, he is the same age as Alli but has barely made 40 caps in his professional career, while the Spurs midfielder has played close to 200 games in all competitions and is an England regular.

Loftus-Cheek has seen his early career stall due to a lack of playing opportunities with Chelsea but has the chance to prove himself on-loan with Crystal Palace this season.

His impressive performances for the Eagles have earned him a call-up from Gareth Southgate, and former Chelsea player and coach Wilkins insists England have a top talent in their ranks.

“This fella has great technique,” the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast co-host said.

“He’s got two feet, he’s got energy and pace, he can score a goal and he can create goals.

“Had he played as many games as Dele Alli through the leagues…

“Dele has played around 200 games now and he’s only 21 – I honestly do believe Loftus-Cheek has the ability to be equally as good as him, no question about it.”
