A man has been charged with the murder of an 80-year-old woman at her home.

The body of Teresa Wishart was found at her house in Changford Close, Kirkby, on Thursday.

A post-mortem examination over the weekend confirmed the pensioner had been killed by ‘blunt force trauma to the head’.

Merseyside Police today confirmed Charles Stapleton, 51, from Watts Close, Kirkby, has been charged with her murder. He is also accused of burglary.

‘My heart goes out to her family and friends who have lost a loved one in the most needless of circumstances.

‘The investigation is still in the early stages and I would therefore urge anyone who knows anything about the incident to contact the police and provide us with any information that they have.

‘We will act on all information given.’

One woman, who said she’d lived in the area for over a decade, tearfully told the Liverpool Echo on Friday: ‘She’s been here for years. Everybody knows her in the area. She’s well respected.

‘It’s a complete shock, I’ve no idea who could do this to her.

‘She was lovely.’

Another neighbour, who’d lived in the Northwood area his whole life, added: ‘I’ve lived around here for years, but I was on the other side of Northwood, and even then I knew of her.

‘Everyone knows her and she’d stop and say hi to anyone in the street. She was just really well known and well respected and she had time for everyone.

‘She’s been here the whole time I’ve lived here, I can’t think who’d do this to her. She was well known and everyone liked her.’

It is understood Teresa leaves behind two sons and two daughters, as well as several grandchildren.

Stapleton will appear at Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens Magistrates’ Court, Liverpool, on Monday morning.
