First-half goals from Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre secured a famous victory for Premier League new-boys Huddersfield as United lost their unbeaten record at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Mourinho was furious at Ander Herrera’s admission that United lacked desire and slammed his team for their lack of application as Huddersfield secured a huge upset.
Manchester United legend Neville said it was a ‘bad loss’ for his former side and admitted he was left stunned by Mourinho’s comments after the game.
‘I thought it would be tough for United because of the atmosphere there but I felt they would come through it,’ Neville told Sky Sports.
‘I didn’t see the game live but I was stunned by the result and also by Jose Mourinho’s comment after about the application of the players, saying it was the worse he’s seen.
‘I’m really surprised – it’s a bad loss for United. Next Saturday becomes a huge game for Manchester United to get back on the bike.’
United will hope to make amends when they face Mauricio Pochettino’s in-form Tottenham side next weekend – Spurs have won four consecutive league games and smashed Liverpool 4-1 at Wembley on Sunday.
‘They’re playing against a Tottenham team with great confidence,’ former England defender Neville added.
‘One thing I would say is that the worst Tottenham performance I’ve seen under Pochettino was probably at Old Trafford last season.
‘So it will be interesting to see [how they perform now] after their recent performances. If they play anything like they did today, United will need to be at their best. It’s a big game for both clubs.’
